Turin's Nature

Description

Túrin was prone to sudden and violent fits of anger. The following demonstrates well the trait that Queen Melian warned him against, and one that often caused grief to himself and those close to him.

During his visit to the King Orodreth the Elf Arminas asked from Túrin: “Are you indeed of the house of Hador, as I heard say?”

That simple question evoked rage in Túrin and he replied crudely: “… A man’s name is his own, and should the son of Húrin learn that you have betrayed him when he would be hid, then may Morgoth take you and burn out your tongue!”

“Arminas was dismayed by the black wrath of Túrin…”

The Elf replied that he had asked his question because Túrin resembled little the kin of Hador, explaining it as follows: “… But others of the House of Hador bear themselves otherwise ... For they use courtesy, and they listen to good council, holding the Lords of the West in awe. But you, it seems, will take council with your own wisdom, or with your sword only, and you speak haughtily.”

Turin was mix of worst traits of his parents. He got his passion and unyielding sense of right and wrong from his father and his cold, merciless and unforgiving nature from his mother. He is very much perfect protagonist of tragedy as his nature makes him do mistakes that ultimately cause great personal tragedy.

Turin is harsh and merciless towards real and perceived slights and equally harsh towards himself. He is also charismatic leader and warrior without equal and prone to acting without consideration of consequences. Man of his ability was needed to kill Glaurung and only man of his nature could be as broken as he was in the end. Even Black Sword pitied him and kept it's promise to kill him swift.
